WILMINGTON, Del.- Officials with the American Red Cross Delmarva Region say they are continuing their response efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.
On Monday night, 25 shelters were open on the Delmarva Peninsula with a total population of 1,878.
As Sandy leaves the region, the Red Cross shares the following safety tips:
- Continue to listen to local officials. If residents were told to evacuate, please wait for officials to say it is safe to return home.
- Stay alert for extended rainfall and subsequent flooding.
- Avoid flooded roads and washed-out bridges.
- Keep away from loose or dangling power lines and report them immediately to the power company.
- Inspect your home for damage. Take pictures of the damage, both of the building and its contents, for insurance purposes.
- Avoid drinking or preparing food with tap water until you are certain it is not contaminated.
- Wear protective clothing and be cautious when cleaning up to avoid injury.
