Teams Ready for Punkin Chunkin

BRIDGEVILLE, Del.- Teams set up their machines for the 2012 Punkin Chunkin event on Friday, a day normally reserved for the chunk. The competition had a day lopped off of it by organizers so the field could dry out after Hurricane Sandy.

"It's a quick draining farm. It's high land, it's sandy, and there's a lot of wind causing evaporation, so it's doing well," organizer Frank Shade said. "It's much better to air on the side of safety than to risk someone getting hurt on the muddy field."

Vendors, musical acts, entertainment and campers also set up on Friday.

Some competitors told WBOC they were worried the chunk would be canceled altogether because of Sandy.

"We thought there was a great chance we wouldn't be here," Paul Sparks of Lewes said. "We've had many, many,  muddy times out here, and this is one of them."
