Johns Hopkins Wrestling Falls to WVU, Maryland at Terp Duals

COLLEGE PARK, MD - The Johns Hopkins wrestling team opened the dual meet portion of the 2012-13 season at Maryland's Terrapin Duals on Sunday. The Blue Jays fell to Division I West Virginia (43-0) and host Maryland (40-6) in their two matches on the day.

The Blue Jays opened with the loss to Mountaineers, but had several close matches. Sophomore Paul Bewak dropped a narrow 4-3 decision to Shane Young at 125, while Henry Stauber took Brutus Scheffel to overtime before falling, 3-1. Young posted a 24-8 record a year ago, while Scheffel was 18-15. The Blue Jays also got a strong effort from Christian Salera at 157 as he fell 4-1 to Dominic Prezzia.

Against the Terps, the Blue Jays earned their six points when Salera won by injury default at 157. Bewak, Stauber and senior Paul Marcello dropped decisions by two points or less at 125, 149 and 141 respectively against the 15th-ranked Terrapins before Maryland put the match away with pins in the final three matches.

Johns Hopkins had opened the 2012-13 season on Saturday, November 3 at the Messiah Invitational. The Blue Jays used a lineup primarily of wrestlers not scheduled to compete against Maryland and West Virginia and placed ninth in a field of nine teams with 6.5 points.

Headlining the Blue Jays' efforts at Messiah was freshman Evan Krumheuer, who picked up a pair of pins at 133 before being eliminated by fourth-seeded Colin McDermitt of Heidelberg in the consolation quarterfinals.

Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, November 10 when the Blue Jays travel to Wilkes to participate in the John Reese Duals. JHU is scheduled to Cortland St., Oneonta St., King's and Wilkes.
