SALISBURY, Md.- The Salisbury University volleyball team will open play in the NCAA tournament on Friday night, and it will do so as the No. 14 team in the nation as the American Volleyball Coaches Association released its final coaches poll of the regular season and the Gulls climbed one spot.
The No. 14 ranking is the highest in program history, as Salisbury has climbed steadily since breaking into the polls on Sept. 11. Salisbury received 266 points in this week's poll, 15 points ahead of the University of Chicago.
The Sea Gulls trail No. 13 University of Mount Union by 32 points. Salisbury closed the regular season by winning two matches in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament, 3-0, claiming the league's automatic berth into the NCAA tournament.
The top three teams remained the same, with a bit of re-ordering, as Calvin College (589 points and 17 first-place votes) jumped one spot to No. 1 in the nation.
Wittenberg University (573 points and six first-place votes) also moved up one place to No. 2. Former No. 1 Washington University of St. Louis (540 points and one first-place vote) dropped to No. 3 while Emory University (517) jumped two spots to No. 4 and Christopher Newport University (508) held at No. 5.
Salisbury will take on Mount Saint Mary (N.Y.) College on Friday night in the opening round of the NCAA tournament at Maggs Physical Activities Center.
