Veterans Honored at Dover Air Force Base

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del.- William Richardson arrived at Dover Air Force Base on Monday wearing the uniform he first put on more than 60 years ago.

Richardson served in the Korean War and says on Veterans Day he remembers those who were never able to come home.

"Knowing how many of those guys that were going ashore that weren't able to come back to the United States," he said. "Of course, I guess I was one of the fortunate ones to come back."

Vietnam Veteran Ron Gough said people are more and more patriotic and it is not just on occasions like Veterans Day.

"I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that we are a country that is still at war," Gough said. "We're in the longest war in our history and I think there's more of that sense of patriotism."

Days like Veterans Day and Memorial Day are a time when we specifically honor veterans, but many say that was not always the case.

"It's sure a lot different than when I came back from Vietnam," said veteran Don Hall. "It was the only time that I was ever spit at. And now I've been to several places where guys have come up and thanked me."

For Richardson, wearing his uniform gives him a sense of pride.

"Another thing that makes me feel proud is when you see the young kids come up to you and shake your hand and say, 'Thanks for serving the country,'" Richardson said.
