HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP)- The state of Maryland is asking President Barack Obama to declare a major disaster in the state due to damage from Superstorm Sandy.

The state's congressional delegation sent the president a letter Wednesday supporting Gov. Martin O'Malley's Nov. 8 request.

The declaration would make Maryland eligible for disaster recovery dollars through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

It would provide individual assistance in the counties of Dorchester, Somerset and Worcester, including Ocean City. The request also seeks public assistance and hazard mitigation funding for all Maryland counties and Baltimore city.

The pre-Halloween storm included winds of up to 90 mph, heavy rain and flooding in much of the state and up to 30 inches of snow in the western Maryland mountains.
