BALTIMORE, MD - Bryon Sofinowski, head coach of the Kent Island
(Stevensville, Md.) varsity football team, has been named Ravens High
School Coach of the Week. Presented by Toyota, this is the 16th year of the Ravens' award program.
In his 13th year as head coach at Kent Island, Sofinowski led the Buccaneers into the Maryland 2A regional semifinals against Wicomico last Friday
(11/9). Kent Island entered the game with a 10-0 record – the school's
first-ever undefeated regular season – fresh off a previous week's win
over Queen Anne's, the Buccaneers' first victory against their county
rival since 2003.
Behind
the late-game heroics of WR D.J. Callaghan and QB D.J. Plumer, Kent
Island advanced to the state's regional finals with a 28-24 victory.
Trailing
24-14 nearing the end of the third quarter, Callaghan broke through the
Wicomico line to block a punt, swinging momentum to the Buccaneers and
setting up a rushing touchdown by Plumer. With just over three minutes
to play in the fourth quarter, Plumer recorded his second ground score
of the contest to give Kent Island a lead it would not relinquish.
"We
really preach to our kids that they have to play like a team, like a
brotherhood," Sofinowski said. "Although we've been down the last two
games in a row, our kids stepped up and played well together as a team.
They did an excellent job not giving up and playing for each other, and
that's the epitome of team in my mind."
The Buccaneers take on Elkton this Friday (11/16), as they look to advance to the state semifinals for a second-consecutive year.
Each
week during the season, the Ravens will honor a high school coach who
has made a significant impact on his student-athletes. Each winner will
be present at the Ravens-Broncos home game on Dec. 16 for the naming of the Ravens High School Coach of the Year.
