DOVER, Del.- Police in Delaware arrested 11 people for driving under the influence last weekend as part of a statewide crackdown against drunk driving, according to the state Office of Highway Safety.
During the "Checkpoint Strikeforce" multi-state campaign against impaired driving, police across the state conducted sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols. Last weekend's arrests brings to 261 the total DUI arrests made as part of the campaign. OHS officials said that statewide, there have been more than 4,200 DUI arrests made in Delaware this year.
In addition to the 11 DUI arrests last weekend, officers captured three wanted persons and made six drug arrests. Officers also issued issued 19 seat belt citations, 11 child restraint citations, and 53 citations for various other traffic violations.
Three additional sobriety checkpoints are scheduled to occur this weekend at the following locations:
Friday, Nov. 16
- North Wilmington (New Castle County DUI Task Force)- checkpoint
- Dover (multi-jurisdictional effort)- checkpoint
Saturday, Nov. 17
- Smyrna (multi-jurisdictional)- checkpoint
Checkpoint Strikeforce is a regional sobriety checkpoint campaign aimed at arresting DUI offenders, and using high visibility enforcement to deter those who would otherwise choose to drink and drive. The campaign, a six-month-long effort running through New Year's Eve, involves setting up weekly DUI checkpoints statewide.
