VDOT to Study Bridge Traffic Over Potomac

McLEAN, Va. (AP) - Virginia's Department of Transportation is launching a study of traffic over the Potomac River bridges.

VDOT says the study spanning several months will also engage Maryland and the District of Columbia, the jurisdictions on the other side of the river from Virginia.

The study will focus on the span of the river from Point of Rocks in the west to the U.S. 301 bridge on the east.

VDOT officials say the study will conclude in the spring and will focus on measuring the problem. It will not recommend any specific solution.

The idea of adding additional spans across the Potomac has been floated for years but typically faces strong opposition from homeowners who fear the traffic impact another bridge would cause.
