WASHINGTON (AP)- Maryland senators are urging President Barack Obama to approve individual disaster assistance for Dorchester, Somerset and Worcester counties to help recovery efforts from Superstorm Sandy.

Sens. Barbara Mikulski and Ben Cardin made the request on Wednesday. That's a day after the Federal Emergency Management Agency announced federal aid is being made available to Maryland for public assistance and hazard mitigation.

FEMA is still reviewing Maryland's request for individual assistance. It would provide housing assistance and support for families and individuals.

The disaster declaration announced Tuesday night makes federal funding available to state and local governments and to certain nonprofits.

The disaster declaration covers Allegany, Calvert, Caroline, Charles, Dorchester, Frederick, Garrett, Harford, Howard, Kent, Queen Anne's, Somerset, St. Mary's, Talbot, Washington, Wicomico and Worcester counties, as well as Baltimore City.
