COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Tianna Hawkins had 25 points and nine rebounds, Malina Howard added 17 points, and Alicia DeVaughn had 14 to help No. 10 Maryland beat American 94-54 on Wednesday.

Maryland started freshman Chloe Pavlech at point guard for the first time and she responded with eight assists and just two turnovers. As a team, the Terps (3-1) dished 29 assists to 14 turnovers. Laurin Mincy added seven assists.

"This was a really nice game for us to be able to get back and do the little things that have allowed us to be successful," head coach Brenda Frese said. "I definitely think we got better defensively today and, specifically, really shared the basketball. You can see our assist to turnover ratio, I thought we were unselfish. I thought Chloe [Pavlech] did a tremendous job being ready to play and getting our team into an offense that dominated inside with our post play. I thought we were really good in terms of how we played with each other today."

Gelesia George had a career-high 13 points for American. Jen Dumiak, who averaged 20.5 points in the Eagles' first two games, had nine. The Eagles had 21 turnovers, eight in the first 9 minutes.

Maryland had a 10-0 run to take a 20-6 lead. The Terrapins led 47-21 at the half, with Hawkins scoring 15 points, and had a 43-point edge at 92-49 with 3:24 to play.

As a team, the Terps shot 40-69 (.580) from the field. One of the nation's top rebounding teams, the Terps pulled in 45 boards to the Eagles' 19. They beat American inside, 65-24.
