LA PLATA, Md. (AP) - Police say the body of a newborn infant has been found in the attic of a home in La Plata.

The Charles County Sheriff's Office is investigating the discovery, which occurred Friday.

The sheriff's office says the people living in the home were cleaning out the attic when they found the decomposed remains and called police. The remains were taken to the Chief Medical Examiner's office in Baltimore for an autopsy. A cause and manner of death have not yet been determined.

Detectives are trying to find the mother of the infant.
