WASHINGTON - Georgetown University sophomore Otto Porter Jr. (Morley,
Mo./Scott County Central) was one of 50 college basketball players selected
to the Naismith Award early season watch list by the Atlanta Tipoff Club.
Porter is one of seven BIG EAST players selected to the Watch List.
The 50-player watch list was compiled by the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of
Selectors, which based its criteria on player performances from the previous
year and expectations for the 2012-13 season. The Naismith Men's College
Player of the Year will be presented on April 7, 2013 in Atlanta.
The selection to the Naismith Award watch list was one of several honors for
the sophomore, who was also named to the Wooden Award Watch List. In
addition, Porter was named an Associated Press preseason honorable mention
All-American and was selected to the preseason All-BIG EAST First Team.
Porter made his season debut last week after missing most of the team's
first two games. In a 2-1 week for the Hoyas, which included a win over No.
13 UCLA and an overtime loss to No. 1 Indiana, Porter averaged 16.7 points,
9.7 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 3.0 blocks and 2.0 steals per game.
Porter finished the 2011-12 season ranked fourth on the team in scoring with
9.7 points per game and led the team in rebounds with 6.8 per game. He
appeared in all 33 of GU's games, starting eight times, and led the team in
field goal percentage, connecting on 52.5 percent of his shots from the
floor. Porter, who averaged 1.5 assists and 1.5 steals, reached double
figures in scoring 14 times, had seven double figure rebounding games and
recorded three double-doubles.
