Dawson Leads Mids to 3-1 Mark, Eclipses Navy Squash Coaching Mark

Posted:

BOSTON, MA —  Thirteenth-year Navy squash coach Craig Dawson guided the 17th-ranked Midshipmen to a 3-1 record in a tour of the Northeast over the weekend and in doing so became the school's all-time winningest coach.  With the trio of wins, Dawson pushed his career mark to 268-103 (.722), passing Hall of Famers Art Potter, who amassed a 267-62 (.812) mark from 1951-77, and Dave Brown, who owned a 267-117 (.695) record from 1982-98.

The Mids improved to 18-2 on the year after claiming an 8-1 win over 13th-ranked Middlebury on Friday evening, while scoring a 9-0 win against MIT and an 8-1 victory over Tufts.  Navy's lone setback of the weekend was a 6-3 loss to eighth-ranked Dartmouth.

"We continue to play well, but just not quite to the level we need to be at to beat a team like Dartmouth," said Dawson.  "We are closing the gap, but we have a lot of hard work to put in."

Three Navy players went undefeated over the weekend, including senior Hunter Bouchard (Greenville, Del.) at the No. 4 position.  Bouchard kicked the weekend off with a five-game win over Andrew Jung of Middlebury on Friday afternoon and came back to win a four-game match against Dartmouth's Michael Mistras, 11-8, 11-3, 10-12, 11-9.  He swept both his MIT and Tufts foes to improve to 18-0 this season.

"Hunter has found a way to win this season," said Dawson.  "He played a solid match against Dartmouth and pulled out the win."

Rookie Mitch Bottini (New Hamburg, N.Y.) won two of his four matches in five games, including a spectacular win against Dartmouth's Bayard Kuensell.  Kuensell took a 2-0 advantage in the match, but Bottini managed to extend the match by fighting to a 12-10 win in the third.  He took the fourth game, 11-6, before sealing the win with an 11-8 victory.  With his flawless 4-0 mark over the weekend, Bottini is Navy's wins leader this year with a 20-0 record.

"I was impressed with Mitch's composure in his Dartmouth match," added Dawson.  "It was a great comeback."

Sophomore Hunter Abrams (Wilmington, Del.) pushed his season record to 18-1 with four wins over the weekend playing the No. 3 spot on the ladder.  He won all of his matches in three games, including a 12-10, 11-9, 11-8 victory over junior Chris Jung of Dartmouth.

Just missing undefeated marks were senior John Richey (West Hartford, Conn.), junior Hunter Beck (Lafayatte Hill, Pa.), sophomores Andrew McGuinness (Merion Station, Pa.) and Colin Barry (St. Louis, Mo.) and freshman Bill Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.).  Barry was perhaps the closest to being 4-0, dropping a 3-2 decision to Dartmouth's Fletcher Pease after going up 2-0 in the match.

The Midshipmen will make their way to Philadelphia next week ahead of the annual Army-Navy football game.  Navy will battle 14th-ranked Penn on Thursday at 6:00 pm and No. 24 Drexel of Friday at 4:00 pm.
