HARTFORD, Conn. - Forward Alyssa Thomas of the ninth-ranked Maryland women's basketball team was voted Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week the league announced Monday. This marks the 12th weekly honor for Thomas, who was named Rookie of the Week a record seven times in 2010-2011 and was named Player of the Week four times last season.
The junior from Harrisburg, Pa. took over the Terps' game at No. 19 Nebraska and led them to a decisive 90-71 win in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge Wednesday. She scored 25 points, added a career-high eight assists, six steals and five rebounds in the road win. The Terrapins (4-1) are the only team in either conference to remain unbeaten in Challenge play.
Maryland senior Tianna Hawkins was named ACC Player of the Week earlier this season.
Maryland will take on No. 2 Connecticut Monday in Hartford, Conn. as part of the Jimmy V Classic. The Terps and the Huskies (6-0) will tip at 7 p.m. in the XL Center. The Terps-Huskies game will be shown live on ESPN2 and can be heard on the Terrapin Sports Radio Network on 1300 AM (Baltimore), 570 AM (DC) and online on UMTerps.com.
This will mark for the first meeting between Maryland and Connecticut, with the series returning to College Park in 2013.
The Terrapins lead the country in rebounding margin by an astounding +22.6. They are top 10 in the country in assists per game (3), field goal percentage (4), scoring margin (5) and assist/turnover ratio (9). Hawkins picked up where she left off last season and leads the country with her field goal percentage of .695.
