WILMINGTON, Del. (AP/WBOC)- More Delawareans are volunteering at charities, churches, schools and other organizations.

That is according to a new survey by the federal government's Corporation for National and Community Service. The survey found more than 186,000 volunteered in the state in 2011, the highest figure since the national survey began a decade ago.

That was up from about 148,000 in 2010. The increase pushed the state's volunteer rate from 21.3 percent to 26.6 last year, just below the national average of 26.8 percent.

The survey also found religious organizations were the most common place for state residents to volunteer. And Delawareans volunteered an average of 30.3 hours, up from 24.3 in 2010, but far below the 36.1 hours in 2008.
