CAMBRIDGE, Md.- Authorities are investigating the cause of an apartment building fire in Cambridge that left 21 occupants injured late Sunday evening.

The Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office said the 10:46 p.m. four-alarm blaze at 507 Race St. took nearly 100 firefighters from approximately 13 fire companies less than two hours to bring under control.

Twenty-one occupants were sent to area hospitals for treatment of injuries sustained when escaping the fire through windows of the three-story building. None of the reported injuries are considered to be life-threatening.

Two firefighters were treated for stress-related injuries at Dorchester General Hospital and released.

The building contained a clothing store on the first floor with four apartments on the second floor and four apartments on the third floor. Five of the eight apartments were
occupied at the time of the fire.

Residents were alerted to the fire by working smoke alarms located inside the building. A definitive dollar loss has not yet been determined. However, Cambridge Fire Chief Robert Phillips told WBOC the building is a total loss.

The State Fire Marshal's Office and the Cambridge Police Department are searching for the origin and cause of the blaze.
