








NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP)- A Newport News sixth-grader is in police custody after school officials found a loaded handgun in his belongings.
Newport News police spokesman Lou Thurston says there were no threats or injuries.
Michelle Price with Newport News Public Schools says that officials at Dozier Middle School recovered the .22-caliber handgun Wednesday morning after other students reported it to an administrator. The loaded gun was given to a school resource officer.
Price says the student was arrested.
Principal Lisa Gatz sent a voicemail to parents notifying them about the incident.
