SU Football Finishes No. 14, 11 in Final Polls

SALISBURY, MD – The Salisbury University football team closed the 2012 season ranked No. 14 in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) top 25 and No. 11 in the D3football.com top 25, the organizations announced.

Salisbury earned 444 points in the AFCA poll, finishing ahead of No. 15 Coe College (421) and behind California Lutheran University (459) in the 13th spot.

The University of Mount Union, which completed an undefeated season at 15-0 was the unanimous No. 1 with all 42 first-place votes and 1,050 points in the AFCA poll. The University of St. Thomas, which Mount Union topped, 28-10, in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl for the national championship, claimed No. 2 with 997 points.

The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (974), the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (914) and Linfield College (876) rounded out the top five.

Salisbury earned 322 points in the D3football.com voting to finish ahead of No. 12 Bethel College (280) and behind 10th-ranked Widener University (384), a 28-7 winner in the NCAA second-round game between the two.

Mount Union took the top spot in the D3football.com poll, with all 25 first-place votes and 625 total points, followed by Mary Hardin-Baylor (587). St. Thomas (585), UW-Oshkosh (547) and Linfield (517) comprised the rest of the top-five teams.

Salisbury (9-3) advanced to its third consecutive NCAA tournament in 2012 after winning its second straight Empire 8 Athletic Conference championship. The Sea Gulls defeated Rowan University, 17-9, at Sea Gull Stadium in the first round on Nov. 17 before falling to the Widener on the road on Nov. 24.
