'Beat the Peak' Alert Issued

UNDATED- Because of a cold front moving into the area, Delaware Electric Cooperative and Choptank Electric Cooperative are asking their members to voluntarily conserve or limit energy usage between the hours of 5 and 8 p.m. Tuesday and between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. Wednesday.

According to the cooperatives, the above period of time will be when their members use the greatest amount of electricity. The cooperatives said that as a result, they will be purchasing power from the market at extremely high prices.

During "normal" load periods the cooperatives pay only pennies per kilowatt-hour for power. However, during "peak" demand or energy periods when the temperatures rise, the cooperatives can pay up to $1 per kilowatt-hour. In turn, the cooperatives must pass these higher costs onto their members, which may have an impact on rates.

Between the hours of 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tuesday as well as between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. Wednesday, the cooperatives are requesting their members to turn off all unnecessary lights and appliances that may not be needed. The cooperatives are also asking their members to delay major appliance usage such as dishwashers, washing machines and clothes dryers and delay any hot water usage.

Other important steps to take might include closing window shades and turning thermostats down a few degrees during these "peak" times.

'Ghost Pots' Hurting Chesapeake Bay's Blue Crab Population

Crabbing season is well underway, and that means hundreds of thousands of crab pots are in the Chesapeake Bay catching blue crabs.

Every morning during crabbing season, you can see watermen gathering up their pots, collecting their catch, and putting the pots back in the water. What you cannot see is the problem: pots that have had their lines severed sit on the bay's bottom, sometimes never seen again, along with the crabs inside them.
