DOVER, Del.- New Year revelers are being forewarned against drinking and driving in Delaware. Police agencies across the state will be conducting four DUI checkpoints this New Year's Eve weekend.

The state Office of Highway Safety said Thursday that there were two drunk driving crashes over Christmas that resulted in two people killed and three injured. Since Thanksgiving of this year, Delaware has seen 57 persons injured and three killed in impaired-driving crashes. Last year the holiday season ended with two persons killed and 24 persons injured in impaired-driving crashes, according to the OHS.

The OHS said that last weekend 10 people were arrested for DUI in Delaware as part of "Checkpoint Strikeforce," which is a regional crackdown on drunk driving.  This brings the total campaign DUI arrests to 328. However, the OHS noted that there have been 4,795 DUI arrests made in Delaware since Jan. 1.

The following four DUI checkpoints are scheduled to occur this weekend across Delaware:

Firday, Dec. 28

  • New Castle (Delaware State Police)- Checkpoint
  • Long Neck (DSP)- Checkpoint

Saturday, Dec. 29

  • Smyrna (Multi-jurisdictional effort)- Checkpoint

Monday, Dec. 31

  • Wilmington (New Castle County DUI Task Force)- Checkpoint
