SMYRNA, Del.- Police have arrested a Smyrna High School teacher following an investigation into allegations that he had a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old female student.

On Monday, Smyrna police took 37-year-old Donovan J. Garvin into custody at his home on Widener Lane in Smyrna. He is charged with 10 counts of first-degree sexual abuse of a child by a person of trust and one count of sexual solicitation of a child under the age of 18 to engage in prohibited act.

Garvin is being held in the James T. Vaughn Jr. Correctional Center in default of $780,000 secured bond.

Police said the Smyrna School District has notified the public that Garvin has been placed on leave and is not permitted to have contact with students.

Garvin's teaching position or employment history with the district are protected by federal and state privacy laws, according to officials.
