BRIDGEVILLE, Del.- Delaware State Police say two people were injured Monday after a tractor-trailer hauling live chickens and a pickup truck collided in Bridgeville on Monday morning.

Troopers said the accident happened at around 9 a.m., as 64-year-old Clarence A. Fisher Jr. of Milton was operating a Chevrolet pickup truck northbound on Oak Road and approaching the intersection with Redden Road. Police said Fisher, who failed to stop at the posted stop sign, continued into the intersection where he struck the right front passenger's side of a 2005 International truck being operated by 55-year-old Kenneth G. Stearrett of Lewes.

Investigators said the truck and semi-trailer, which was fully loaded with live chickens, then swerved to the left before overturning in the roadway and sliding eastbound before coming to a stop.  The pickup truck was rotated in a clockwise manner and continued in a northeasterly direction, then struck an electrical pole before it came to a stop in the grass north of Redden Road, police said.

Fisher was initially airlifted by DSP helicopter to Beebe Medical Center in Lewes before being flown to Christiana Medical Center where he is currently listed in critical condition.  A 45-year old-male passenger was transported to Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury by EMS where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released.

Stearrett did not require any on-scene medical attention, according to police.

Redden Road between Deer Forest and Chaplains Chapel roads was closed for approximately 5 ½ hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.

The accident remains under investigation.
