Offshore Wind, Fracking Facing Maryland Lawmakers

Posted:

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Wind energy and hydraulic fracturing are among the environmental issues facing Maryland lawmakers during this year's General Assembly session.

Maryland Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller says he wants a bill supporting offshore wind to reach the Senate floor and will make committee changes to make it happen during this year's session, which begins Wednesday. The governor has tried for two years to pass an offshore wind bill. Miller says he supports offshore wind, but the costs to consumers and where workers would come from are factors.

Montgomery County Delegate Heather Mizeur, meanwhile, plans to introduce a bill to ban hydraulic fracturing for natural gas until a study ordered by the governor is fully completed. However, legislators have not been able to decide how to fund the study.
