(Photo: MGN)DOVER, Del. (AP)- Delaware lawmakers are seeking to revise a law allowing prison officials to use contraband seized from inmates to help pay for prison operations.
The Confiscated Contraband Interdiction Fund was set up years ago and allowed officials to use contraband money seized from inmates to pay for canine units at prisons in all three counties and investigations of criminal activity inside prisons, including the introduction of contraband and gang-related activities.
A bill filed Tuesday would expand the contraband fund program to include the women's prison in New Castle and proceeds from the sale of contraband items, not just seized currency.
The bill also expands permissible uses of the fund to include any legitimate correctional investigatory or security purpose.
