NORFOLK, Va.- The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference released its annual men's and
women's tennis preseason poll and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore tennis teams were each represented. The men's squad was predicted to finish fifth, while the women were selected to place sixth. This was the first poll that the tennis teams have been ranked in this season.
The women's team receives their selection after going 1-16 last season. The squad has four
student-athletes and 13 combined victories eligible to return from 2012. UMES defeated Bowie
State in the season finale and nearly took down Coppin State last May.
Howard was predicted to win the North as the Lady Bison received 272 points and 14 first-place votes. Delaware State was second with 251 points and Hampton was third with 217. Morgan State took fourth with 194 votes, Coppin State was fifth with 152 and UMES was next with 124.
South Carolina State was chosen to win the South as the Lady Bulldogs amassed 25 votes and
308 points altogether. The Lady Hawks received the 11th most points of the 13 women's tennis programs in the MEAC.
The men went 0-17 and 0-7 in the MEAC last season. The squad nearly picked up a victory at
Wesley and expects two wins to return from last year's squad. The team is eligible to return all
of its student-athletes from last year.
On the men's side, Morgan was took home top laurels in the North with 216 points and 13 first-
place votes. Hampton was second with 191 points and Howard was third with 161. Coppin took
fourth with 148 votes and UMES was next in 124. South Carolina State had 222 points and 14
first-place selections to land first in the South, while Florida A&M was second with 194 and six
first-place votes. The men received the lowest number of votes in the MEAC.
