RICHMOND, Va. – After completing her 40th career double-double against Old Dominion on Sunday and a posting a two-game average of 23.5 points and 10.0 points per game, the Colonial Athletic Association has named University of Delaware senior Elena Delle Donne its women's basketball Co-Player of the Week.
Delle Donne collected 28 points and 13 rebounds in Delaware's 63-46 win at Old Dominion Sunday, the 77th 20-plus point game of her career.
Earlier in the week, the All-American posted 19 points and seven rebounds as the Blue Hens routed George Mason in their CAA opener, 62-27. In that game, Delaware recorded its best defensive effort in 40 years as the 27 points allowed was the lowest since 1973.
For the season, Delle Donne averages 23.4 points and 10.6 rebounds per contest through eight games played.
Additionally, she holds a season average of .953 (41-for-43) from the charity stripe. The forward has tallied 35 straight free throws since Dec. 20, which ranks third in school history, behind the school-record 52 straight and 39 straight, both her own records.
The Hens (11-3, 2-0 CAA) have won six straight games, including 21 straight in CAA regular season play. They are currently ranked No. 2 in the CollegeInsider Mid-Major Poll (Jan. 7) and have received four votes in the AP Top 25 Poll (Jan. 14).
Drexel's Hollie Mershon shared CAA Player of the Week honors with Delle Donne while James Madison's Precious Hall was named the CAA Rookie of the Week.
Delaware continues CAA road play Tuesday as the Hens travel to Boston, Mass., to take on Northeastern (9-5. 2-1 CAA) at 7 p.m.
