YORK, Pa.– The Capital Athletic Conference announced its first weekly track & field awards on Tuesday and Salisbury University student-athletes collected three of the four awards for their performances at the CNU Holiday Open, hosted by Christopher Newport University. Junior Kara Tolson and sophomore Ashley Reilly swept the women's awards while sophomore Dylan Burkett collected the men's field award.
Reilly was named the women's Field Athlete of the Week after breaking the school record in the pole vault, clearing 9' 0.25". The previous school record had stood since 2007. She placed 10th in the event, but was the second-highest Division III competitor.
Tolson also set a school record, running the 200-meter dash in 25.95 seconds, nearly a half-second faster than the previous school mark, which she set last year, to be named the CAC Track Athlete of the Week. She placed fifth in the field of 76 runners, and was the top Division III finisher. Tolson also teamed with junior Alex Greissinger, sophomore Brooke Schulz and freshman Lauren Snyder to run the 4x400-meter relay in 4:09.71, just shy of a school record. The time is currently the 10th best in the nation in Division III.
Burkett was named the CAC Field Athlete of the Week after placing sixth in two events at the CNU Holiday Open. He was the top Division III performer in the weight throw, with a distance of 43' 3.75", and was the second-best Division III performer (behind teammate Ryan DiPascale) in the shot put, with a heave of 43' 9".
The awards are the first weekly CAC honors for Burkett and Reilly, while Tolson has previously claimed six Athlete of the Week awards in her career.
The track & field teams will be in action for the first time in 2013 on Jan. 26, traveling to the Thomson Invitational, hosted by the University of Delaware.
