REHOBOTH BEACH, Del.- A Delaware man has been charged with drunken driving for the sixth time.

Delaware State Police said 39-year-old Jeffrey W. Barnes of Bear was pulled over shortly after 1 a.m. Friday in Rehoboth Beach. Police said a trooper on routine patrol observed an SUV driven by Barnes as it made an illegal U-turn, drove south in the northbound lanes of Coastal Highway and then crossed a concrete median into the southbound lanes.

When the trooper initiated a traffic stop, Barnes pulled into the parking lot of the Wal-Mart. Police said Barnes then got out of the SUV and tried to run away but was arrested after a short foot away.

According to investigators, a computer check revealed that he has been convicted of driving under the influence five times: in 1996, 1997, 1999, 2003 and 2006. He was charged with sixth offense DUI (felony), resisting arrest, aggressive driving, illegal U-turn, driving the wrong way on one-way road and related offenses. He was ordered held in the Sussex Correctional Institution on $9,400 secured bail.
