ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP)- Maryland's Senate president says Gov. Martin O'Malley's offshore wind proposal is getting early and significant show of support in the state Senate.

Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller said Friday the governor's proposal has 24 sponsors in the Senate. A bill needs 24 votes to pass the chamber.

Miller, a Democrat, says that sends a message that something will move forward, although Miller noted the bill is likely to be amended during the session.

The Democratic governor has pushed unsuccessfully for the offshore wind measure in the last two legislative sessions. A scaled-back version passed the House of Delegates last year.

The measure would help develop wind power off the coast of Ocean City. It could cost residential ratepayers $1.50 more a month on their electric bills.
