COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The 10th-ranked Maryland women's basketball team will travel south to Atlanta this weekend to take on Georgia Tech Sunday at 3 p.m. in a nationally-televised matchup on ESPN2.
Sunday's game will be a repeat matchup of the 2012 ACC Championship game, in which the Terrapins won 68-65 on March 4 to win the program's 10th league title. Reigning ACC Player of the Year Alyssa Thomas dominated with 29 points to lead the Terps and earn the Tournament MVP honor.
The Terrapins (14-3, 5-1 ACC) are coming off of an 82-62 victory over NC State Thursday night in College Park. The ACC's leading scorer, Tianna Hawkins, led the way with 26 points, a season-high 17 rebounds, three assists and a block. Thomas added 18 points, while freshman Tierney Pfirman scored 16.
The Yellow Jackets (8-9, 1-5) have lost four of their last five and were edged at Miami, 71-65, Thursday night.
The Terps lead the nation in rebounding with their margin of +17.0. Currently, Hawkins and Thomas are Nos. 1 and 2 in the ACC in scoring and rebounding. Hawkins leads with 19.1 points per game and Thomas is second with 16.2. Thomas is No. 1 in rebounding with 10.4 boards per contest and Hawkins is second with 10.1. Thomas is also No. 3 in assists and freshman point guard Chloe Pavlech is No. 3 in assist/turnover ratio.
