ALLENTOWN, PA -- Host Muhlenberg College defeated visiting Washington College, 77-69, in a Centennial Conference women's basketball game this afternoon in Allentown, PA. The Mules improved to 10-6 overall and 7-4 in conference play with the win, while the Shorewomen slipped to 8-9 and 6-6 with the loss.
Muhlenberg went on a 7-1 run late in the first half to build a 38-32 lead on a jumper by Alita Zabrecky with 26 seconds remaining before Washington junior guard Claire Mattox (Arlington, VA/Potomac School) hit a running jumper with two seconds on the clock to trim the margin to 38-34 at halftime.
A 9-2 spurt early in the second half extended the Mule lead to 55-43 on a pair of Zabrecky free throws with 12:42 to play in the game. Muhlenberg led by at least 10 points until the final 30 seconds of the game.
Zabrecky led the Mules with 17 points and six rebounds. Leanna Tallamy added 12 points for Muhlenberg, while Hannah Rush dished out seven assists.
Freshman guard Ashley Espinosa (Reading, PA/Governor Mifflin) paced the Shorewomen with 20 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Emily Hubley (West Chester, PA/Bayard Rustin) chipped in a career-high 14 points, while junior guard Kelly Mitchell (Laurel, MD/Academy of the Holy Cross) added 10.
The Shorewomen return to action Wednesday with a 6:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Bryn Mawr.
