GREENSBORO, N.C. - Junior forward Alyssa Thomas of 10th-ranked Maryland was named ACC Player of the Week Monday for the second straight week, third this season and seventh in her career.
Thomas averaged 23.0 points and 8.5 boards per game in the Terps' wins over NC State and at Georgia Tech this week. Thomas played positions 1-4 for the Terps (15-3, 6-1 ACC) and also averaged 7.0 assists per game. Against the Jackets, the junior notched a season-high 28 points and scored eight straight in the second half to continue a 24-2 run that helped the Terrapins to a tough road win. Against the Wolfpack, Thomas fought through early foul trouble and found a way to add 18 points, six assists, seven boards and a steal in 27 minutes.
Thomas is the first player in the league to earn back-to-back Player of the Week honors since Tianna Hawkins did on Feb. 13 and Feb. 20 last year. Thomas was named Player of the Week in consecutive weeks on Jan. 2 and Jan. 9 of last season. This is Thomas' 14th career weekly honor from the ACC, as she was named Rookie of the Year seven times in the 2010-11 season.
Thomas is No. 2 in the conference in scoring (16.8 per game), rebounding (10.3 per game) and assists (5.5 per game). Hawkins leads the league in scoring (18.9 per game) and rebounding (10.4 per game) and is No. 2 in field goal percentage (.581) to teammate Alicia DeVaughn (.626).
