Maryland led 35-29 at half, then struggled through cold-shooting in the second half. Thomas scored nine points in the game's final minutes to cut it to two.
North Carolina (18-1, 6-0) has won 11 straight games since falling to Tennessee, 102-57, last month.
Thomas was named ACC Player of the Week Monday for the second straight week, third this year and seventh of her career. This is her 14th weekly honor, after being named ACC Rookie of the Week seven times.
The Terps lead the nation in rebounding with their margin of +17.3. Currently, Hawkins and Thomas are Nos. 1 and 2 in the ACC in scoring and rebounding. The senior has scored in double figures in 17 of 18 games this season and has 10 double-doubles already, which matches her total last year.
