Volunteers to Tally Homeless Population in Del.

Posted:

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Volunteers are heading out across Delaware to count the number of people who are homeless in the state.

Several dozen volunteers will conduct the survey this week. The federal government requires the count in every state and U.S. territory. The numbers provide data for researchers and policy makers to understand the problem of homelessness.

Last year's survey counted only those staying in shelters. It found 986 homeless people in Delaware. There were 128 households that included at least one adult and one child. A separate count was held in June and found more than 200 people living without shelter.

This year's count will include an effort to find homeless people who are not in shelters. Volunteers will begin the process Tuesday evening.
