BETHANY BEACH, Del. – The University of Delaware men's and women's tennis teams kicked off their 2013 spring slate Sunday with wins over Morgan State at the Sea Colony Tennis Resort.

The Blue Hen men kept things exciting all the way to the end with a come-from-behind 4-3 win over the Bears to start the season with a 1-0 record.

Juniors Troy Beneck and Adam Lawton opened the singles matches each with wins.  Beneck defeated Dmitriy Borodkin, 6-2, 6-2 while Lawton cruised past Ondre Cargill en route to a 6-1, 6-1 victory. The duo also teamed up to beat Borodkin and Cargill in doubles by a score of 8-1.

Returning to singles action, Morgan State's Duk Young-Park defeated UD freshman Mike Furr by a score of 6-4 and 7-5 while the Bears' Evan Ward also won with a score of 6-3, 6-4 over Delaware junior Jason Derene.

The Blue Hens needed singles wins from sophomore Evan Andrews and freshman Alex Sweet to wrap up the team victory.  Both fell in the first set by a score of 3-6 and created exciting drama over the final two sets with comeback victories.  Andrews defeated Eric Ward, 3-6, 6-4, 12-10 while Sweet picked up the win over Jannick Tash, 3-6, 7-5, 10-5.

In doubles play, Morgan State took two out of three matches to earn a team point.

The Delaware women had a little bit of an easier time in their matches against Morgan State as they pulled out a 6-1 team victory.

Freshman Danea Jonjic picked up the first singles point of the day for the Blue Hens with a 6-4, 3-6, 10-4 win over Mi'Kola Cooper. Fellow freshman Carmen Lai followed suit with a 6-4, 6-3 victory against Jasmine Edwards.

Another freshman, Nataliya Naumova, cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win against Chelsi Russell while junior Olivia Heim posted a 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Tiffany Hughes.

Delaware senior Amanda Halstrom won her point by default as Morgan State only had five women competing.

Junior Dorothy Safron fell to Ekaterina Iakovleva, 6-0, 6-2 in the first flight.

On the doubles' side, UD finished the day with a 2-1 record to earn a team point.  The pair of Kim Milla and Naumova defeated Iakovleva and Edwards by a score of 8-3.  Heim and Halstrom also earned a point by default.
