BALTIMORE- The University of Delaware men's lacrosse squad, which will open the 2013 season Saturday at NCAA Division I newcomer High Point at 1 p.m., earned votes in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Coaches Pre-Season poll announced earlier this week.

The Blue Hens, led by 38th-year head coach Bob Shillinglaw, welcome back 29 letterwinners and 13 players with starting experience from a team that went 6-9 overall a year ago. Delaware lost four of those games by three goals or less. The Blue Hens will feature one of the nation's youngest teams this spring with 33 of the 46 team members either freshmen or sophomores.

Senior Eric Smith, who returns to action after missing all of 2012 with an injury, will lead the offense on attack with support from a talented group of midfielders led by senior Nick Diachenko, junior Connor McRoy, senior Dom Sebastiani, and junior Garrett Johnson. Sophomore Brandon Worrall, a CAA All-Rookie pick a year ago, will lead the offense in front of returning starting goalkeeper, sophomore Chris Herbert.

Delaware was one of nine teams that also received votes in the USILA Top 20 poll, which will be announced each Monday during the season beginning on Feb. 18. The Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media pre-season poll was also announced this week but the Hens did not earn votes in that poll.

Defending national champion Loyola was the No. 1 pick in the USILA poll as the Greyhounds earned 232 points and received 10 of the 12 first place votes. Delaware will host Loyola Feb. 16 at 3 p.m. at Delaware Stadium.

Maryland was at No. 2 in the USILA poll followed by Notre Dame, Johns Hopkins, North Carolina, Duke, Virginia, Cornell, Denver, Colgate, Lehigh, Massachusetts, Syracuse, Princeton, Penn State, Fairfield, Yale, Bucknell, Ohio State, and Hofstra.

In addition to facing Loyola this season, Delaware will take on four other teams listed in the Top 20, including an Apr. 26 game at No. 12 Massachusetts, an Apr. 20 home game vs. No. 15 Penn State, a Feb. 9 home game vs. No. 18 Bucknell, a Mar. 16 home game vs. Hofstra, a Mar. 2 game at Villanova, and a Mar. 30 game at Drexel.

In the Nike/Inside Lacrosse poll, Loyola was No. 1 with 21 of the 26 first place votes followed by Maryland, Notre Dame, Duke, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, North Carolina, Denver, Virginia, and Lehigh in the top 10.
