Stewart Earns 17 Boards, 6 Steals in UMES Women's Basketball Loss

PRINCESS ANNE, MD - Despite Shanyce Stewart earning career-highs in rebounds and steals, UMES was unable to overcome an early deficit and fell to North Carolina A&T 67-55 at the Hytche Athletic Center on Saturday. UMES falls to 5-12 overall and 1-5 in-conference, while N.C. A&T goes to 13-7 this season and 5-2 in-conference.

UMES has now fallen in four straight games, the first time since 2011 that the team has been defeated in four MEAC contests in a row.

After each side exchanged a pair of scores to open the game, the Aggies went on a 14-0 run, with seven points by Tracy King including a pair of perimeter baskets, to lead 18-4 after the second media timeout.

Chalyse Taylor (Louisville, Ky.) used the three-ball to help UMES get back into the game, hitting a pair early to get the Lady Hawks back in the game. Good UMES defense also assisted as the Lady Hawks trailed by ten 26-16.

Following an N.C. A&T 5-0 run, Jessica Long (Fort Washington, Md.) put up a pair of free throws and a layup in a row for four straight points. She earned a basket and one towards the end of the half, but the Aggies led 40-25 at the break.

Out of the locker room, Fred Batchelor changed the lineup. At 46-29 N.C. A&T, UMES used the fast break, forced turnovers and rebounding by Stewart (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) to power its way to an 11-0 run to get within six 46-40 with 12:53 left to play, the closest the Lady Hawks had been since the early run by the Aggies.

Possessions started slowing down as the Lady Hawks tried to keep pace. Despite help from the from the free throw line, UMES was held without a field goal for over eight minutes, as a Karona Roach (Bear, Del.) jumper followed by a make and one pulled the home team within seven 58-51 with 2:31 left.

But despite a good second half, UMES could not get closer, as JaQuayla Berry kept hitting free throws and led N.C. A&T to a 67-55 win.

Stewart earned a career-high 17 rebounds and six steals in the effort, adding five points. Shawnee Sweeney (Colonial Heights, Va.) earned a team-high 11 points, going a perfect 5-5 from the free throw line, while Taylor concluded with nine points off the bench, scoring all three baskets UMES made from the perimeter.

Berry had a near double-double for the Aggies, earning 23 points and eight rebounds, going 10-11 from the free throw line. King concluded with 12 points and eight rebounds, while Amber Calvin had 13 points and three steals.

UMES will prepare for North Carolina Central on Monday for a 5:30 p.m. contest at the Hytche Athletic Center.
