ELLENDALE, Del.- Delaware State Police say a truck driver was killed when his vehicle left the road in Ellendale and struck several trees and a utility pole.

It happened shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday on Beach Highway (SR16) west of North Union Church Road. According to police, 37-year-old Kenneth W. Johnson of Bridgeville was operating a Mack rollback truck towing a 30-yard trailer containing scrap metal.

Police said the vehicle failed to negotiate a moderate left turn, then left the road and hit several trees and a utility pole. Troopers said that at one point, the trailer, which was secured only to the truck's winch, struck the passenger compartment of the truck. Ultimately, the truck came to rest approximately 40 feet from the roadway, according to investigators.

Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident remains under investigation by the DSP Collision Reconstruction Unit.
