CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Visiting Gettysburg College got game highs of 20 points, eight assists, and four steals from Caroline Murphy as the Bullets defeated host Washington College, 61-49, in a Centennial Conference women's basketball game this afternoon inside Cain Athletic Center.
Neither team led by more than five points in the first half. A Gettysburg jumper by Murphy with four seconds left in the period evened the score at 26-26 at halftime.
The Bullets (17-6, 14-4 Centennial) used a 9-1 run to open up a 42-36 lead on a three-pointer by Jessica Porter with 11:38 remaining in the second half. The Shorewomen scored the next four points to trim the margin to two, but the Bullets responded with the next 13 points to build a 55-40 cushion on a pair of free throws by Murphy with 5:05 to play. The Bullets led by at least eight points the rest of the way.
Murphy shot 8-for-20 from the field and converted all four of her free-throw attempts en route to her 20 points. She also had five rebounds in the win. Porter added 18 points, 13 rebounds, and a game-best five blocks for the Bullets, whileCori Younghans supplied Gettysburg with nine points off the bench.
Freshman guard Ashley Espinosa (Reading, PA/Governor Mifflin) led the Shorewomen with 13 points, five boards, and three steals in the loss. Junior forward Erin Fitzgerald (Greensboro, NC/Bishop McGuiness) added 11 points, nine rebounds, and three steals, while junior forward Latisha Pledger(Chesapeake, VA/Indian River) finished with a game-high 16 rebounds and six points.
The Shorewomen (10-13, 8-10 Centennial) return to action Wednesday with a 6:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Ursinus.
