RICHMOND, VA - The No. 4 Maryland women's lacrosse team wasted little time getting its offense rolling in a 20-7 victory at Richmond Sunday in the 2013 season opener.
Seniors Alex Aust and Katie Schwarzmann led Maryland, combining for 10 points on seven goals and three assists. Beth Glaros, Kristen Lamon, Mattie Meredith and freshmen Halle Majorana and Taylor Cummings each netted two goals. Cummings added five draw controls as five freshmen saw their first action in a Maryland uniform.
Schwarzmann kicked off the Terps' scoring with a goal 19 seconds into the game. After Richmond knotted the game at 1-1 a minute later, Aust put the Terps up by one with a goal at 27:45. The senior then padded the Maryland lead to two with another score four minutes into the contest.
Beth Glaros, who missed the end of the 2012 season with a knee injury, returned to net her first score of the year at 20:46 for a 4-1 Maryland advantage. Following a Spider goal, Schwarzmann racked up her second goal of the match at 16:10 before a pair of goals from fellow senior Aust extended the lead to 7-2.
Maryland would continue its torrid offensive pace and capped the first half outscoring Richmond 5-1 in the final 13 minutes of the period.
The Terps opened the second stanza on a 4-0 run, sparked by two
goals from Majorana. Richmond flanked a Glaros' goal at 12:04 before
the Terps picked up three consecutive scores with under five minutes to
play. Richmond ended the match with a pair of goals with time fading.
A total of 10 different Terrapins accounted for the 20-goal showing. Senior Kasey Howard notched her first career start in the cage and tallied four saves.
"It was great to get out there and get the season started," head coach Cathy Reese said. "We got contributions from a lot of different players today and I thought both offensively and defensively we looked sharp."
Maryland will travel to Syracuse for a game against the No. 2-ranked Orange Sunday at 1 p.m.
