PRINCESS ANNE, Md.– The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference released its first softball player of the week honors on Wednesday and University of Maryland Eastern Shore freshman third baseman Trenece Nash (Decatur, Ga.) was named MEAC Player of the Week. She collects the award after hitting .583 with three doubles and nine RBI in four games.
It was Nash's effort that has propelled UMES to its best start in 21 years. The Lady Hawks went 3-1 on the weekend after they swept a doubleheader against Saint Peter's on Saturday, before splitting two games on Sunday. The wins snapped UMES' 35 game losing streak and Saturday's sweep was the first for the team since 2009.
Nash began her collegiate career with the game-winning hit in UMES' first game of the year. She singled home the winning run on her first collegiate hit in the fifth inning of the contest.
In Saturday's nightcap, she walked three times and scored two runs. Nash combined to go 6-for-9 on Sunday with three doubles and eight RBI, including a 4-for-4 effort in the final game of the series.
The Hawks also had senior Carmen Gurrola (Arleta, Calif.) named to the "Other Top Performers" list. Gurrola went 3-0 with a 3.20 ERA in 19.2 innings this past weekend against Saint Peter's. She did not allow an earned run and picked up two wins in 11 innings on Saturday.
South Carolina State's Vianney Gomez was named MEAC Rookie of the Week, while Savannah State's Torrian Wright was named MEAC Pitcher of the Week.
