DOVER, Del.- Delaware State University has been picked to win the 2013 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Northern Division baseball race, according to poll of league head coaches and sports information representatives. The Hornets are the defending MEAC North champs, winning the crown with a 22-2 league record in 2012.
DSU received 17 of 18 first place votes and 213 total points in the 2013 poll, well ahead of second place Norfolk State, which collected the other first place vote and 163 total points.
Maryland-Eastern Shore (141 points) and Coppin State (131) round are third and fourth, respectively, in the North poll.
Defending league champ Bethune-Cookman is the voters' choice to win the MEAC Southern Division race.
The Hornets advanced to the MEAC Tournament championship game for the first time since 2004 last season. DSU tied a school-record with 40 wins in 2012 (40-17-1), highlighted by a team-record 17 game win streak.
The MEAC has also announced its pre-season all-conference team and players-of-the-year.
Delaware State's Ryan Haas (sr.), the reigning MEAC Player-of-the Year, has been picked to earn the honor again in 2013.
The 2012 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player-of-the-Year, Haas was tops in the MEAC with a .360 average (73-for-203) last season. He also led the league and was tied for 19th among all NCAA Division I players in doubles (0.40 per-game; 22 total). In addition, Haas was tied for second in the MEAC in hits (73), third in on-base percentage (.468) and fifth in slugging percentage (.483) during the 2012 season.
Haas also posted a 4-1 record and 3.65 earned run average as a pitcher for the Hornets last season. Among his pitching highlights were regular season victories over Delaware and Navy, and a MEAC Tournament win over North Carolina A&T.
The Bear, Del., native received honorable mention for the 2012 CollegeBaseballInsider.com Division I All-America Team.
Delaware State pitcher Jordan Elliott (sr.), infielder Cameron Cecil (jr.) and catcher Eddie Sorondo (jr.) were also picked to again earn All-MEAC First Team recognition in 2013.
The Hornets open the 2013 season with a four-game series at UNC-Charlotte this weekend. The teams will play a single game on Friday, a doubleheader on Saturday and wrap up the series on Sunday.
Delaware State will play its home opener on March 1 against Niagara. The MEAC opener is scheduled for March 16 at Norfolk State.
