








PRINCESS ANNE, Md.- Freshman Petra Kubesova set a new conference record in the 5,000-meter run. The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Track and Field team in competing in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championship held February 14-16 in Landover, Md. Kubesova helped the Hawks to a fourth place finish on the women's side, while the men finished seventh. Kubesova earned gold in the event, and beat out the second place finisher by just under 60 seconds. She finished in a time of 17:02.49, earning the Hawks 10 points in the event. Basil Melek finished in a time of 15:52.49, and gave the Hawk men two points with his finish in the 5,000-meter. Geranda Williams finished a place out of qualifying for points in the long jump, finishing with a finals distance of 5.18 meters. Teammate Denvil Ruan finished in the long jump with a distance of 6.41 meters. Lenora Guion-Firmin and Gayon Evans finished first and seventh, respectively, in the 200-meter dash preliminaries. Guion-Firmin ran a 24.57-second time, while Evans sprint a 24.73-second finish. Andre Walsh ran 21.54-second time to finish second in the 200-meter dash preliminaries. Walsh will compete in the second heat for the Hawks. Marcus Wallace finished in 10th with a 22.49, and will run in the third heat. The Hawks and the other MEAC schools return to competition Friday, Feb. 15.
