CENTER VALLEY, PA – There's a tie for first place in Patriot League women's basketball after Army swept the season series with Navy Saturday to capture the coveted Star contested between the two fierce but honorable service academy rivals.
The Black Knights won 48-40 in Annapolis, Md., holding off Navy's chance to clinch a home quarterfinal game in the Patriot League Tournament. Instead, Army fostered a tie and is in the driver's seat with the head-to-head tiebreaker.
Elsewhere, Holy Cross rebounded from Wednesday's loss at Navy with a 73-63 victory at home over American, sending the Eagles to their second straight loss and giving Army and Navy a two-game cushion in first with four to play.
Lafayette provided some drama in one of the two nightcaps. The Leopards were down 16 at halftime and rallied to force overtime before winning it in the extra session, 66-61. Their win, coupled with Lehigh's 62-40 triumph at home against Colgate, created a three-way tie for fifth a game behind fourth-place Holy Cross.
Wednesday's action includes Lehigh visiting Bucknell, American hosting Navy, Army going to Colgate and Lafayette entertaining Holy Cross. All games tip at 7 p.m.
