Dover, DE - Delaware State rallied from a 15-point halftime deficit to tie the game, but Norfolk State rebounded for a 60-56 win in a MEAC men's basketball contest in Memorial Hall today. The league leading Spartans won their 12th straight game to improve to 18-10 overall and 13-0 in the MEAC.
The loss snapped a two-game win streak for the Hornets, who fell to 12-14 and 7-5.
Norfolk State also snapped an eight-game losing streak at DSU's Memorial hall, dating back to the 2003-04 season.
Delaware State was 7-for-24 from the floor in the first half (29.2%), and trailed 33-18 at the break. The Spartans were 15-for-29 from the field in the opening period (51.7%).
The Hornets outscored Norfolk State 23-8 to start the second half, and tied the score at 41-41 on a jumper by Kendall Gray with 8:52 left.
The score was 44-44 when Norfolk State went on a 9-2 run. The Spartans opened up a 53-46 lead on a lay up by Jamel Fuentes with 3:24 remaining.
Delaware State rallied during the next three minutes, and pulled to within 58-56 after a three-pointer by Amere May with 30 seconds left to play.
On the ensuing possession, Norfolk State's Pendarvis Williams missed the front end of a one-and-one at the free throw line. Delaware State rebounded the missed free throw, but missed a chance to take the lead when May misfired on a three-point attempt with 11 seconds to go.
Williams hit two free throws with six second remaining to seal the win for the Spartans. He led three Norfolk State players in double figures with 18 points.
Tyshawn Bell came off the bench to lead the Hornets with 13 points. Marques Oliver had his second double-double of the season against Norfolk State, tallying 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Delaware State will close out its 2012-13 home schedule on Monday against Hampton. Game time is 7:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
