New Possible Gas And Diesel Tax In Virginia

Posted:

TEMPERANCEVILLE, Va. - In a 60-40 vote the Virginia House of Delegates voted for a bill that would replace the gas tax in Va. The current tax is 17&1/2 cents per gallon on gas and diesel.

The new bill would place a 3.5% tax on gas and a 6.0% tax on diesel fuel. Gov.. Bob McDonnell is hoping the tax will help increase revenue for state transportation.

Business owner Burton White from Temperanceville says the difference in diesel would hurt business.  His trucks for his company run on diesel. "It's going to really hurt everybody not just me. I'd have to raise the prices if it went up like that. Raise prices on your fill dirt and especially the stone.  I'd have to raise prices you know five or ten more dollars."

The bill would also increase Virginia's sales tax from 5 to 5.3% including vehicle purchases. There would also be fees on alternative fuel vehicles like hybrids all for more tax revenue for transportation in Virginia.
