DEAL ISLAND, Md.- The Somerset County Sheriff's Office says it arrested a Deal Island man accused of posing as a firefighter and soliciting cash to fuel his alleged drug habit.

Timothy Ralph Abbott, 35, is charged with nine counts of fraud-misrepresentation for fund raising, theft scheme- less than $1,000, theft- value less than $1,000, and violating a court ordered protective order.

The Sheriff's Office reports that over the past few months, it had received numerous complaints about a man, identified as Abbott, soliciting cash donations for the Deal Island Fire Department.

Deputies said that during their investigation, they learned that Abbott- who is not an actual firefighter- had been going door-to-door to residents in the Deal Island area wearing a Deal Island Fire Department hat, and asking for cash donations for the department.

Authorities said that after Abbott had received cash and or checks, he would give a free smoke detector for the donation. The smoke detectors that were given out to the homes had been reported stolen from the fire department, according to investigators.

Following his arrest on the aforementioned charges, Abbott was ordered held on a $25,000 bond.
