Lawmakers Honor Tuskegee Airman From Delaware

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Delaware's congressional delegation is honoring a Wilmington resident who was a member of the Tuskegee Airmen, a group of black combat pilots who served in World War II.

The lawmakers say Fred Johnson, the only commissioned black navigator from Delaware during the war, did not receive his honor when previous awards were given to the Tuskegee Airmen.

Sen. Tom Carper and Rep. John Carney planned to honor Johnson on Monday with the Congressional Gold Medal.

Delaware National Guard General Frank Vavala planned to join Carper and Carney for the ceremony at Howard High School in Wilmington.
