Bullet Removed From Wilmington Officer's Skull

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP)- A bullet that was lodged in the skull of a Wilmington police officer when he was shot last month has been removed.

The family of Patrolman Justin Wilkers say that doctors removed the bullet Monday and also reconstructed the 35-year-old officer's ear canal.

Doctors will give the bullet to investigators in case it's needed for evidence.

Wilkers was shot Feb. 3 after he and his partner tried to stop an SUV for a traffic violation. The SUV fled then stopped, and three suspects got out and one fired at the officers. Wilkers was struck on the left side of his face. The bullet caused no apparent brain or nerve injury.

Wilkers is a 3-year member of the police force.

Three suspects have been arrested.
